Bamboo charcoal explained: BBQ, activated, and specialty grades

Bamboo charcoal is not one product. Here are the grades a Vietnamese exporter typically produces, and which one matches your application. BBQ charcoal (lump and briquette). Carbonised bamboo segments, typically 600–800°C kiln. Calorific value 6,500–7,500 kcal/kg, ash content 4–8%, fixed carbon 75–85%. Burns hotter than wood charcoal, less smoke. Briquettes mix bamboo char with starch binder and compress for consistent shape. Most exported to Korea, Japan, EU summer market. Restaurant binchotan-style. Higher-temperature carbonisation (1,000°C+) for white-ash, low-smoke, long-burn restaurant grade. Vietnamese version is sometimes marketed as "Vietnamese binchotan." Premium pricing, limited supply. Activated charcoal (water filtration). Steam-activated post-carbonisation. BET surface area 800–1,200 m²/g for water filtration grade, 1,200–1,800 m²/g for high-end. Sold in pellet, powder, or extruded form. Used in municipal water treatment, aquarium filters, residential filtration cartridges. Activated charcoal (air purifier / deodoriser). Lower BET (400–800 m²/g), packed in mesh bags or sachets. Sold to home goods brands, automotive deodoriser markets. Vietnamese exporters are competitive on this grade. Cosmetic grade. Ultra-fine powder, food-safe processing, low heavy metal. Used in face masks, soaps, toothpaste. Smaller volume but higher margin. Requires ISO 22716 (cosmetic GMP) audit at the supplier. Agricultural / soil grade. This crosses over into biochar territory — see our separate biochar article. Typically lower-temperature char, higher residual VOCs unacceptable for biochar but fine for soil amendment. Specifications to lock down. Particle size (mm or mesh), moisture %, ash %, fixed carbon %, BET surface area (for activated only), heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As).
